In celebration of the New Years 2011 Weekend and as a special tribute to a dear friend who passed in the spring of 1989 here is my "All This Time" house mix which you may wish to download for your New Year 2011 Weekend celebration.

Here is my complete 2010 Into 2011 music mix collection which includes several New Age Music compilations. You may also enjoy "No Regrets" and "You Raise Me Up" from my Mixology archives.

My preferences lend toward uplifting trance.

Happy 2011.

Merry Christmas

"Backdropped by a Colorful Earth" serves as the image for this 2010 Into 2011 greeting card. From the NASA Image Collection, and taken in December 2006, it depicts STS-116 Mission Specialists Robert L. Curbeam, Jr. and Christer Fuglesang participating in the first of the mission's three planned sessions of extravehicular activity as construction resumes on the International Space Station.

Click the greeting card to listen to and/or download my "O' Christmas Tree" holiday music mix which features a tracklist of free Christmas music downloads from Amazon.com.

Though not Christmas music, you may also enjoy my "Cloudburst Flight" new age / rock mix and tribute to Tangerine Dream. Which, by the way, is excellent traveling music.

Download a larger size of the above greeting card from my 2010 Into 2011 Greeting Card series.

Merry Christmas 2010.

Robbie Leslie: "Two Nights of Amazing Disco Classics"

Here's a little piece of club history for your enjoyment. In 1985 the Saint introduced an all new party - DISCO DIVAS. This night would be dedicated to an all classics format and featured live performances by Loleatta Holloway, Jackie Moore, and Sarah Dash. It was one of the Saint's most successful parties and spawned three sequels. Rarely had I seen such an excited and joyful crowd packing the dancefloor. The music is a celebration of the 70's and early 80's and includes, in addition to Disco's greatest hits, many of the rare and forgotten tunes that made dancing a thrilling ritual and a weekly event! This party has been beautifully restored and newly mastered to CD.
In addition to the SAINT'S DISCO DIVAS PARTY I am offering here the REVENGE of the DISCO DIVAS from San Francisco's legendary Trocadero Transfer. This CD set features an entirely different, all-disco programme that will keep you smiling and moving!
TWO COMPLETE DISCO EVENTS

SPECIAL PRICES:
DISCO DIVAS at the SAINT – 12 DISCS – $150
REVENGE of the DISCO DIVAS at Trocadero Transfer - 13 DISCS - $125

Mixcloud for Streaming DJ Sets & Mixes

I came across an excellent site for DJs to stream their sets and mixes.

Rather than a podcast hosting site which offers downloading, Mixcloud is a cloudcasting site for streaming. Not downloading.

I particularly like the tracklisting and chapters features, for the benefit of the listeners and for the purposes of paying royalties to artists, performers and labels through their licenses with the various collecting societies.

Last chance for Russell U. Richards "Fiji Mermaid" Movie!

Hello everyone,

Thanks to you, my Kickstarter fundraising campaign for "Fiji Mermaid" has exceeded its projected goal by over 30%. I can't tell you how grateful I am to have a concrete budget for this film, and for the outpouring of support I have received. The campaign ends on the early morning of Dec 15, and I promise this will be my last reminder about it!

Handmade items like T-shirt, etching, or Fiji Mermaid will no longer be available after the 15th, so the next few days will be the last chance to pledge for those items. I'll do my best to make and ship everything in time for holiday gift-giving. If you haven't seen it already, a little about my film project and fundraising campaign here:

Thanks again, and have a wonderful holiday season,

Two Historic Exhibits at Smithsonian Reynold's Center Focuses on Gay Art History

In connection with my ongoing interest in gay culture and heritage series, in recent weeks. I've made a point to check out threee exhibits that explore and/or focuses on gay art and history.

While, unfortunately, I missed Jeff Sheng's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" exhibit at HRC HQ during the 2010 FotoWeek DC Festival I was able to capture Matthew Black's "The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence: Identity Writ Large" at the Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery.

Remembering Metro Weekly's update a couple weeks ago pertaining to the Hide/Seek gay art at exhibit at the Smithsonian NPG and in connection with my Sundays At The Museums series stopped in at the Smithsonian Reynolds complex at 8th and F Streets in NW Washington DC this past Sunday.

Upon my arrival, I first checked out the Hide/Seek Family and Friends Day activities at the Kogod Courtyard. During which time I captured Ken Vegas of DC Kings and Diane Wakowski of Belladonna Romka in a dance performace. Follwed by a performace of the DC Swing orchestra band from the DC's Different Drummers group. Videos of these two diferent acts will be added later.

I then checked out the Hide/Seek exhibit on the 2nd floor of the National Portrait Gallery. Two artists whose work was on display I have more than a passing connection to. Not only were Mapplethorpe and I close friends but his image of me was featured as the March 1987 Saint Black party poster.

And having partied in the same circles at Studio 54 I actually own two of Warhol's works.

With photography restrictions in place, I have no images nor video of the Hide/Seek exhibit.

My 21 November 2010 Sunday at the Museum series came to a close with a visit to the "Lost and Found: The Lesbian and Gay Presence at the Archives of American Art" exhibit at the Lawrence A. Fleischman Gallery. As a poster, newspaper and magazine collector gay subject matter is of particular interest to me.

Click the above image to view my Lost and Found: The Lesbian and Gay Presence at the Archives of American Art photo album.

Both exhibits, Hide/Seek and Lost And Found, will be on display through 13 February 2011.

Russell U. Richards' “Fiji Mermaid” Movie

Dear friends and supporters,

For over a year I have been devoting my creative energies almost exclusively to a movie project. “Fiji Mermaid” is a surreal short film based on historical depictions of mermaids as sinister seductresses, and it's practically bursting at the seams with special effects and art, including a hideous sea hag, a beautiful naked mermaid, a mysterious peep show box and a sideshow banner that comes to life! With my small but well-chosen cast and crew we've filmed scenes on the Chesapeake Bay, and underwater in a pool, and now we're preparing for a green screen studio sequence, followed by a big shoot on Coney Island in early 2011.

Please take a moment to watch the above mini-documentary about the making of “Fiji Mermaid” at Kickstarter.com.

The four-minute video includes lots of cool behind-the-scenes production footage, and you can learn how to support this cinem-aquatic adventure and get a gorgeous 18 x 24" movie poster, DVD or Blu-ray, an original etching- I'll even make you a one-of-a-kind Fiji Mermaid! Kickstarter is an innovative fundraising tool for creative projects that is very popular in the art and film community right now, but there is no commitment to pledge if you want to just go to the site and check out what I've been up to.

Please contact me here or (434) 825-0557 if you have any questions about my film, special effects or design work, or about the Kickstarter campaign. You can also read about the movie, and see some fun production photos on my blog http://russellrichards.typepad.com.

Thanks again for your support and interest in my work,

Russell

My "Memories" of Georgetown Walk / WDC Saturday, 9 October 2010 Video Project

Since 2006, I have often re-launched my ongoing "In The Fall Of The Year" docu-project with a ritual Labor Day Weekend or early October photo walk through Georgetown.

Unfortunately, since my camera was damaged during my 11 July 2010 documentation of Spain's FIFA victory celebration at Dupont Circle, this year, it was necessary for me to embark on a video walk as opposed to a photo walk.

Featuring a special trance mix, "Memories", that I created specifically for this project click the image for a 5 minute preview of my Memories of Georgetown Walk / WDC - Saturday, 9 October 2010 video project which focuses primarily on store windows along M Street in Georgetown. Which, again, is one of my many ongoing themes.

To view the entire almost 35 minute video project you will need to download the Veoh Web Player.

And, particularly, if you are into documentary projects that result in large video files I strongly suggest that you sign onto VEOH.

My 57th Birthday and 30th Year of The Saint Mixes

In celebration of my 57th Birthday which took place on 5 October 2010 and the 30th anniversary of The Saint which opened on 20 September 1980 I recently created two music mixes.

Namely, Soul / Heaven and Saints & Sinners.

Having created several mixes over the past two years and in particular since last November of mixes that relect on music from The Saint my 57th birthday writing project entitled "Living In The Past" brought attention to the fact and while I did not realize it at the time but when dancing and partying to the music of that time I actually was experiencing forms of institutionalized racism and sexual racism that to this day impact my life.

So, and as realized last November when working on the "My First, Last & Everything" mix when I now listen to much of the music from that time my memories are often tainted with flashbacks. It, therefore, is important for me that I create new memries. Which is what my trance exploration means to me.

Unfortunately, for me (a black man), many of my memories of the past are very different and are in sharp contrast to those of my white counterpart.

So, in remembering the good times that I had dancing and partying at The Saint with Frank, Steve and Rae Ann as well as a tribute to Robert Mapplethorpe whose image of me was featured on the 1987 Black Party poster invitation my October 2010 "Soul / Heaven" house / gay circuit mix features a tracklist of music and remixes mostly associated with THE SAINT. Click the above cd cover to download the mix.

While in an attempt to create new memories, my October 2010 "Saints & Sinners" mix features a dark trance tracklist that may would be heard at a gay sex and dance party. Or, at The Mineshaft, if it still existed.

Click the cd cover at left to listen to and/or download the mix.

There are at least two other October mixes in the works that while celebrating THE SAINT's thirty year history will also push the envelope in creating new memories.

When I now attend circuit events or go to dance clubs while I may enjoy hearing gay anthems from the past I also look forward to not only remakes and remixes of the old music but, more importantly, new sounds that are more reflective of today's music.

And when I leave I want to have heard something that I've never heard before. And to have danced to on that dance floor what I may will never hear nor experience on any other dance floor.

That is what my trance exploration is about.

Visit Elvert Barnes Mixology for my entire music mix archives.

And yet, another study on racial discrimination and disparities in the gay community

When last week that I read a Metro Weekly Update pertaining to Rob Smith’s 20 September 2010 article “Black and Brown and Discharged All Over” I thought to myself, here is yet another study that sheds light on what I have spoken of and written on for almost two decades.

And while waiting for my quarterly dental cleaning last Monday I came across another excellent Metro Weekly article by Daniel W. K. Lee entitled "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" which speaks on sexual racism in a similar manner as have I.

Throughout my entire life, this almost 57 year old gay black man, has spoken not only the truth but, more importantly, the unspoken truths.

But, the truth has not ever been what "they" wanted to hear. Nor could 'they' handle!

While generally speaking, it is perceived that racial tolerance and diversity are celebrated within the LGBT communities, as a 57 year old gay black man who, over the years, practiced integration and in sharp constrast to my white counterpart I now find myself commemorating rather than celebrating.

Shot during my October 2010 National Equality March / WDC documentation, click the image to view my Leonard Matlovich Memorial Service and DADT Protest photo album.

Berlin Photographer Nicolaus Schmidt's "Breakin´ the City" Publication Set for December 2010

Scheduled for publication in December 2010, "Breakin´ the City" by Berlin photographer Nicolaus Schmidt shows New York from an unusual perspective. A new form of city life by moving planes and whirling through the urban canyons of the megacity. Amidst the hustle and bustle living sculptures seem from another time dimension to the product. This illustrated book, also an urban photo tour of New York shows, break dancers from the Bronx and Brooklyn who see the city as their stage, as the two young dancers who show during the frantic drive of express trains on the New York Subwaysystem their adventurous leaps. In the second part of the book is the photographer in front of the dancers in striking portraits, and reports in addition to his own personal experiences with the most amazing break-dancers and their life stories.

Stories of The Saint: 20 September 1980 Opening

At midnight on September 20th 1980, the Saint nightclub opened in New York City’s East Village. In celebration of that historic event, The Saint At Large presents Stories of the Saint.

While I did not attend the opening, having just relocated to NYC from WDC the week after Labor Day 1980, in celebration of my 5 October birthday and after a mda punch party at our Chelsea apartment, my best friend and roommate would make our first of many visits to The Saint just two weeks after its opening.
