My "I Am What I Am" Mix Celebrates This Weekend's NYC Pride
Perhaps, if I had more time I may would have been able include songs from the 1969 Billboard Top 100 list in the I AM WHAT I AM mix which celebrates the 2009 NYC Heritge of Pride and commemorates the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. But, since, I try and compile dance mixes that reflect a gradual bpm increase or decrease ... and limited to the 80 minute cd format ... it just did not work out that way.
Whether, or not, you are heading to NYC for this weekend's Heritage of Pride and 40th anniversary of Stonewall Riots, the final and 5th installment of my GLBT Pride 2009 series entitled I AM WHAT I AM ... featuring classic 'gay' disco, house, progressive house and trance ... is a mix that will make you dance your ass off!
In fact, you may wish to download the entire GLBT PRIDE 2009 series as individual cds or for your mp3 player. Each, just under 80 minutes, by the time you reach NYC ... you're be ready to DANCE and PARTY YOUR ASS OFF!
Here are the four other mixes from the GLBT Pride 2009 series:
- Freedom To Love - 31 May 2009
- Strange Fruit (For The Black Men) - 6 June 2009
- Blowin' In The Wind (Vocals) - 10 June 2009
- Touch Me In The Morning (Vocals) - 18 June 2009

The fojol bros' Traveling Culinary Carnival Food Mobile
When I first saw the silver but colorful 60's looking van gliding down 18th Street on Saturday afternoon, 6 June 2009 I presumed that it was an ice cream truck. And then when the very next day that I saw it for the second time turning onto P from 14th Street, presuming it to be an ice cream truck but noticing the 'circus' resembling logo on the side of van while it brought to mind the Milkmachine band who I captured a fews before at Artomatic Opening ... I wondered if it had any connections to the Showbar Presents the Palace of Wonders on H Street in NE Washington DC.
Well, I got my answer yester evening when during my ritual Sunday walk along P Street that I happened upon the fojol bros. of Merlindia Traveling Culinary Carnival at the corner of 15th and P Streets in NW Washington DC.
After first asking if they sold ice cream I mentioned that as a freelance blogger I like to bring attention to interesting and provocative entrepeneurs. And wondered if they had a website that I could learn more about then.
Saying that they had just sold out of their popcicles the friendly man under the ORDER HERE window who goes by kipoto explained that born and raised in Washington DC that he and his family wanted to bring food to the streets in a new and an exciting way.
First hitting the streets on 20 January 2009 as a test run, the Fojol Bros. of Merlindia Traveling Culinary Carnival food van officially began operation on 24 April 2009.
While most street vendors are tied to specific intersections or pockets of the Mall, the Fojol Brothers of Merlindia usually take a lap around the city before settling on a vacant parking spot and announcing the location on Twitter.
A truck with flavor, the Fojol Bros from Merlindia their intriguying looking truck, according to Carlos in DC, can be found in neighborhoods throughout Washington DC.
Serving what they call Merlindian food—popular Indian dishes such as chicken masala served with big smiles and a few winks—the Fojols have quickly become an after-work favorite in Dupont and the late-night snack of choice for bar-hopping crowds at the intersection of 14th and U streets, NW.
The outlandish truck supposedly belongs to the fojol brothers of Merlindia, known to their customers as Dingo, Ababa-du and Kipoto. But the men behind the masks are actually a group of twentysomething guys, mostly D.C. natives, with a passion for cuisine, community and carnivals.
With a philosophy such as this and menu that serves these offerings the fojol brothers of Merlindia has proven to be relatively successful in DC's new and emerging street-food scene.
To learn more about them visit their website. But, if you're into Twittering (which I am not) you can find them here.

After first gathering at Franklin Square Park on 14th between I and K Streets in NW Washington DC on Saturday afternoon, 13 June 2009, the 20 to 25 'almost naked' participates stepped-off from 14th and I Streets for a ride to the US Capitol.
Where after a brief photo-opt the 20 or so 'almost naked' riders streaked through the streets for a final news rally in front of the White House.

WDC Artist Nicholas F. Shi Displays WHITE KNOT in Support of Marriage Equality
Often when passing through the intersection of 15th and P Streets in NW Washington DC I will make a point to photograph the artist studio window of Washington DC's gay artist Nicholas F. Shi.Similarly, it is also my practice to photograph the Dupont Circle area including 17th and P Streets before the annual Capital Pride Parade.
It was during my Before the Captial Pride Parade Walk on Saturday afternoon, 13 June 2009, that after first noticing the Marriage Equality / White Knot sign in Shi's front yard ... the huge White Knot that hangs from the townhouse's front facade caught my attention.
A non-profit organization founded by Frank Voci in November 2008 in response to the passing of Proposition 8 in California and bans on same-sex marriage and the denial of equal rights for LGBT persons across the nation and around the world, White Knot for Equality's mission is to work to achieve equal rights for the LGBT population by.
Having also participated in the 15 November 2008 DC March For Equal Rights Against Proposition 8, Shi and his partner Frank Blackburn recently hung the White Knot on the facade of their townhouse in celebration of the Pride 2009 season.

My "Blowin' In The Wind" PRIDE 2009 mix features classic 'gay' disco VOCALS
Let me start with a shout out to JustCircuit.MAG contributor Mickey Weems who's recent "Fly-Over Land" feature in the June/July 2009 issue of JustCircuit.MAG ... is a must read for those who produce compilations or podcasts for gay circuit events or gay music lovers.I, too, believe that it is important to include not only new and fresh music but also selections and/or remixes from the past.
When completed, my GLBT PRIDE 2009 series will include 5 compilations.
While a copy of the first installment, FREEDOM TO LOVE was dropped off at the DC Eagle last Saturday night, final touches on the second installment, STRANGE FRUIT was not completed until Sunday.
Opening with "Runaway Love" by Linda Clifford and featuring Etta James' BLOWIN' IN THE WIND as the title song ... the third installment of the GLBT PRIDE 2009 SERIES ... which includes old 'classic' as well as new favorite 'gay' VOCALS will be dropped off at the DC Eagle later tonight in celebration of the Captial Pride 2009 weekend.
While the 4th installment which should be completed by next weekend's Baltimore Pride will also highlight vocals, the 5th and final installment, featuring trance and new age, will be in time for the NYC Pride celebration.
Click the cd cover to listen to and/or download my June 2009 BLOWIN' IN THE WIND (Vocals) Gay Pride Mix podcast.
The image used on the cd cover was taken by me during the 14 October 1998 Matthew Shepard Candlelight Vigil at the US Capitol's West Lawn.
