DC Council votes to recognize same-sex marriages

Click logo to read Washington Blade Breaking News blog posted dated Tuesday, 5 May 2009.

While I am a STRONG SUPPORTER of same-sex marriages and glad to hear that the DC Council passed the measure ... as a 50 something gay black male who, over the years, practiced integration ... I also understand why Marion Barry who has supported gay rights throughout the years ... may disagree.

The disparities that now exist between my white counterpart and I are far more extreme now than they were 30 years ago. And, as a 50-something gay black male, it is now very clear to me that the disparities that now exist between my white counbterpart and I have a direct correlation to the institutionalized racism that I have experienced, over the years.

I support same-sex marriage but, UNDERSTAND why Marion Barry does not.

Gay Documentary Filmmaker Kirby Dick's OUTRAGE opens this weekend

Having premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival two weeks earlier, OUTRAGE, a documentary film by Kirby Dick ... will open at select theaters this Friday, 8 May 2009.

A Magnolia Pictures production, OUTRAGE is a searing indictment of the hypocrisy of closeted politicians with appalling gay rights voting records who actively campaign against the LGBT community they covertly belong to.

According to information in the press kit my work (Elvert Xavier Barnes) is listed in the Television Clips & Photography Courtesy Of credits.

Sweetgreen / Dupont "Takes It To The Street"

Nicolas Jammet, Jonathan Neman, and Nathaniel Ru, 23-year-old recent business-school graduates, first met in an entrepreneurship class at Georgetown University. Together they hatched a plan for an eco-friendly business and sought the expertise of Core Architecture + Design to redesign an iconic hamburger shack on M Street. The result of this collaboration is Sweetgreen ... a certified green restaurant offering healthy salads, wraps, and frozen-yogurt concoctions.

Shortly after an August 2007 opening at the Little Tavern location on M Street in Georgetown Nicohlas, Jonathan and Nathaniel were making plans for two other locations of Sweetgreen at Dupont Circle and Bethesda.

Sweetgreen / Dupont opened its doors for business on Wednesday, 1 April 2009 ... serving FREE LUNCH from 12 noon until 4pm ... in honor of Spoons Across America, a non profit that provides food and nutrition education.

The two-day grand opening event carried over into a Thursday Night, 2 April Grand Opening Party featuring LA's DJ Grant Shapiro.

Grand Prize winners of the 2008 Retail Design Award and developers of the soon to hit the streets SWEETFLOW MOBILE ice cream truck ... as lovers of music, the owners of Sweetgreen host frequent block parties.

As was the case when during my Saturday, 18 April 2009 photowalk that I captured Nicolas and Jonathan 'takin' the music to the streets'. Click the image above to view my Sweetgreen / Dupont album.

In many ways they remind me of twin brothers Mark and Eric Michaels who after graduating from Georgetown University launched Occasions Caterers.

Nicolas Jammet, Jonathan Neman and Nathaniel Ru are of a new breed of entrepeneurs.

They're GREEN and, mark my words, are THE FACES OF THE FUTURE and the rhythm of the times!

Busboys & Poets at 5th & K in the CityVista Complex

Since Kenny, a friend, mentioned to me just before Thanksgiving last fall when I ran into him at the Safeway at Waterfront Mall that he worked at the newly opened Safeway at the CityVista Complex I have been meaning to revisit the 5th and K Street area of NW WDC.

My interest in the CityVista Complex was sparked again when a few weeks later that CW Kelly III of the DC Cowboys invited me to a grand opening event at the 5th Street Ace Hardware. Which, actually had opened a few months before in June 2008.

It was during my Easter Sunday Photo Walk last week through the Mount Vernon Triangle area that I realized, for the first time, that Andy Shallal had opened a Busboys and Poets at the CityVista Complex.

After delivering some photos and music cds to Bill at the DC Eagle on Friday night since I had not yet eaten dinner I decided to stop in at the Busboys and Poets at the CityVista Complex.

I've known Andy Shallal since the early 90s when a friend, Joe H, and I would frequent Cafe Luna at 1633 P Street in NW WDC. Which is where I held my first exhibit in the the summer of 1994.

Since then, not only have I frequented the various restaurants that Andy has been involved with including the Luna Grille and Diner on Connecticut Avenue and then Shirlington VA but have also documented and participated in many of the anti-war and political events that Shallal has been supported.

And, from the moment that I stepped onto the sidewalk in front of Busboys and Poets at the corner of 5th and K in NW, it was if I had 'come home'.

It was the same feeling that I got when I first visited Cafe Luna with Joe in the early 90's. And it has been the same feeling that I have gotten each and every time that I have ever frequented any of Andy's establishments. Or, when I happen upon him at protests, rallies and vigils.

From the moment that I walked into the door, the staff was more than accommodating. Busy and attentive but not intrusive. I ordered an ginger ale with lime and then an entree of Homemade Meatloaf with mashed potatoes and sautéed mushrooms in a red wine sauce. Garnished with spinich.

Though I was concerned that I may would have a problem with swallowing which is a condition that I have had for more than a year ... I manage to gulp the entree down with little difficulty.

As a big fan of meatloaf and mashed potatoes, Busboys and Poets version, at $11.95, is an entree that I highly recommend.

The tab came to $15.29. Having provided me excellent service, I thanked the waitress and handed her a $20 bill.

While I had wanted to get some photos of the current exhibit on display throughout the space I'll wait until my next visit to report on that. Which, hopefully, will be very soon.

After the First Busboys and Poets opened its doors on September 7, 2005 at 14th and V Streets in NW WDC, the second location opened in Shirlington VA in August 2007.

While the third location at the CityVista Complex opened last September, the 4th location at Arts District Hyattsville is slated for fall 2009.

In Dedication to DeAnthony Henson, SWNA Unveils Historic Fire & Police Call Box Art During SWDC's Cherry Blossom Fireworks Prelude

Long before I began documenting the Historic Fire and Police Call Boxes in the SWDC Neighborhood I had already recorded call boxes in the Downtown Circle, Penn Quarter and Adams Morgan areas of NW WDC.

Police and fire call boxes were installed throughout the capital starting in the 1860s. Although they became obsolete with the introduction of the 911 emergency call system in the 1970s, they remained on the streets until the mid-80s.

Art on Call is a city-wide effort led by Cultural Tourism DC to restore Washington DC's abandoned police and fire call boxes as neighborhood artistic icons.

Armed with information provided to me by the SW Call Box Committee, in October 2007 I embarked on an historiographic project that would attempt to photograph all boxes listed on the SWDC Call Box Inventory.

When I heard news last week that the Southwest Neighborhood Assembly (SWNA) would launch its 11 April 2009 National Cherry Blossom Festival Fireworks Prelude activities with an Unveiling Ceremony of Historic Call Box Art at the Disabled American Building ... in dedication to DeAnthony Maurice Henson who was shot and killed three weeks after my 18 October 2007 documentation ... I made sure to document the Unveiling Ceremony.

Click the above image to view the 11 April 2009 SWNA Historic Call Box Art Unveiling video. Which may also be found in the Unveiling of SWDC Historic Call Box Art - DAV - Maine Avenue & 6th Street, SW, WDC - 11 April 2009 album.

And here are the photos of the Unveiling Ceremony which preceeded the Unveiling.
