Future of Lower 8th Street, SE Community Meeting - Wednesday, 29 October 2008

The construction of the I-395 freeway separated lower 8th Street, SE from upper Barracks Row and led to the demolition of some of the historic street frontage. Lower 8th Street has not experienced the same level of economic and physical revitalization that can be seen on upper Barracks Row. However, these blocks are strategically positioned between the Capitol Hill neighborhood, the historic Navy Yard campus, and the new development occurring in the Capitol Riverfront and surrounding Nationals Park. Lower 8th Street could become a destination gateway that provides an exciting connection to all of these areas.

A 7pm community meeting will be held on Wednesday evening, 29 October 2008 at the Friendship House (619 D Street SE) to discuss the future of 8th Street, SE south of the I-395 Freeway with Urban Planning Masters students from the University of Maryland.

First Annual RACE TO REMEMBER 5K draws more than 500 in benefit of National Law Enforcement Museum

Organized by the Washington DC Metropolitan Police in benefit of the National Law Enforcement Museum, the first annual National Law Enforcemont Officers Memorial RACE TO REMEMBER 5K was a triumphant success as several hundred volunteers and supporters cheered the more than 500 running participates on.

First assembling at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial at Judiciary Square just off F Street between 4th and 6th Streets and directly across from the National Building Museum from 6:15 until 8:15 am a Pre-Race Rally was held just before the 8:32 am step-off.

The race would then proceed east on F to 3rd Street, NW, and south on 3rd to Pennsylvania Avenue which is where it veered left until First Street, NW. South on First Street pass the US Capitol through the National Mall until Independence Avenue in SW and then left until First Street, NE.

Proceeding north to East Capitol Street, east on 2nd Street, NE, and then west onto Independence Avenue, SW, runners passed the Library of Congress and the US Supreme Court along the way.

On a return trek along Independence Avenue the Cannon, Rayburn and Longworth House and Congressional Buildings were to their left and the US Capitol Grounds and US Botanic Gardens appeared at their right before a final stretch north along 3rd Street through the National Mall to E Street, NW.

Where a final rush or stride to the triumphant Finish Line brought them back to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial grounds and directly across from the future site of the National Law Enforcement Museum.

Though I did not stay for the entire After The Race Ceremeony here is the NLEOMF blog article "Truly ... A Race to Remember" which gives an excellent rundown of the event.

Here is where you can find the official results by searching for Race to Remember: National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial 5K - 19 October 2008. According to the official results here is my photo of the first two runners Andrew Duncan (#444) of Las Vegas NV and Antonio Eppolito (#343) of Albuquerque NM just seconds before they reached the finish line at 5:19 and 5:20, respectively.

Though still under construction here is my NLEOMF Race to Remember 5K - 19 October 2008 photo collection at Flickr.

Who You Gonna Call ... For TV Repair?

When more than a year ago that the cable connector in the back of my RCA TV broke off ... and in sharp contrast to many years ago ... I was able to find only a few tv repair shops in the yellow pages.

After speaking with one particular shop in NE WDC who said that on such a minor job that they do not not like to do home service since the job may be more involved than what first was expected but if I were to bring it in that they could have it repaired within a day or two for about $75, since I do not have a car, I decided to purchase a new one instead.

I took the subway out to Best Buy at Pentagon City and returned with a Toshiba for a little more than $250. And since then the RCA has been sitting on top of the dresser drawer in my bedroom. And while I could and have used the DVD / CD player the TV, itset, was not much of an issue since I never sleep in the bedroom.

Until recently ... when guests stayed at my apartment for the funeral of one of their family members.

When searching the yellow pages last Saturday for TV repair services in the WDC area I found even less options than I had a year or so ago. After calling the three or four listings, the first who returned my call was William Davis of Davis Electrics.

When I inquired if I could bring the TV to his shop on Saturday, Sunday or Monday he said that it may would be best if he made a home visit. Which, quite frankly, was fine with me. The cost, for home service would be $112.36.

We made telephone arrangements for a Tuesday morning visit, sometime between 9 am and 12 noon. His voice and mannerism was such that when I received a return call from one other TV repair service company that I found in the Yellow Pages ... thanking him for having returned my call I told him that I had already made arrangements with another company.

When Mr. Davis telephoned me shortly after 11 am on Tuesday, 14 October to inform me that he was on his way to my apartment ... mentioning that I was between Waterfront Mall and Fort McNair I gave him instructions of what he needed to do to enter excess through the complex's gate.

Arriving shortly before noon, Mr. Davis conducted his business in a most professional and friendly manner. Within the hour, he had restalled the cable connector and made sure, before leaving, that it was in proper working order by first testing it out on the cable box in the living room.

Though his fee was $112.36, and handed him $120.

So, if you were to ask me who would I call if I were in need of a TV repair service my resounding answer would be WILLIAM DAVIS of DAVIS ELECTRICS at 202-332-2555.

His shop is located at 1522 U Street, NW, WDC.

My Secondi Consignment photo featured in the October issue of DIY City Mag DC

When in early September that I received an email from Deb of DIY City Mag requesting permission for use of my Windows of Dupont Circle photo of the Secondi Consignment Clothing store on Connecticut Avenue in their forthcoming issue that would highlight artists and artist resources in WDC ... I, of course, said yes.

An online magazine that celebrates the independent artist and the Do-It-Yourself spirit, founders / editors Deb and Wendy launched their first issue in February with a focus of NYC, of course. A second issue published in July focused on New Orleans.

Released on 6 October 2008, the third issue highlights WDC.

Click the cover below to read the DIY City Mag E-News dated 10 October 2008 informing me of the October issue of DIY City Mag DC.

You will find my Secondi Consignment Clothing image on the Flickr Contributors and Fav Vintage & Thrift Stores pages.

Also of note are featured articles on Scenic Artisans' Sean Hennessey who since our first encounter during the 2006 Downtown Holiday Market I have made a point to keep abreast of his work and Mike Berman of Diverse Markets Managment who since the 2005 Downtown Holiday Market I have reported on many times.

Bead Designer Alan Covert who I always enjoy running into at Eastern Market or the many other Diverse Markets Management events that we have encountered each other ... is also featured.

DIY City Mag is an EXCELLENT ONLINE publication and one that I think deserves some recognition! I think I'll shoot an email off to Martha Stewart.

Take a look at the DYI City Mag DC October 2008 issue and I'm sure that you will agree.

And here are the February 2008 NYC and July 2008 New Orleans issues as well.
