In the process of a gradual shift from Flickr to Ipernity, here is my One Planet, Ours (Cool Globes) Exhibition - US Botanic Garden / WDC - 22 September 2008 album at Ipernity.

Obama T-Shirts & Hats at Carl's Barber Shop on P Street (Logan Circle)

While this may be true in most ethnic communities ... barber shops, beauty parlors, radio, and 'the church' are of great cultural, social and networking importance in the black community. Which is why when launching my Barber Shops & Beauty Salons documentary project in 2002 that my first feature article was on Brice's Barber Shop on Barrack's Row in SE Washington DC.

And why I have taken a more than passing interest in Carl's Barber Shop at 1406 P Street in the Logan Cirlce area of NW Washington DC which I first visited in the spring / summer of 1985.

When on Thanksgiving eve, 26 November 2008 that I stopped in at Carl's Barber Shop to get my hair by Vincent, I noticed a table at the rear of the shop that featured Obama tee-shirts and hats that were for sale.

Operated by Master Barber/Stylist Zach Turner the Obama merchandise at Carl's Barber Shop includes three different styled of long and short sleeved tee-shirts and a selection of pink, blue, red and white baseball styled caps.

While I do not now recall the prices of the short sleeve shirts or hats, the long sleeve shirts are $20.

So, if you are looking for Obama t-shirts and hats or are in need of a hair cut, may I suggest that you visit Carl's Barbershop / Unisex at 1406 P Street in NW Washington DC.

National Day of Protest Against Prop 8 - 15 November 2008

Remember that tomorrow, November 15, is the day to join fellow activists in protesting Prop 8. Thousands of people have committed to protesting in their city on Facebook. The D.C. March for Equal Rights is scheduled to start at the grassy space near the Capitol reflecting pool between the pool and 3rd street at 1:30 p.m. At 2 p.m., marchers will walk down Constitution Ave toward the White House and rally at the NE corner of Lafayette Park. More information can be found here.

It looks like the Alexandria protest is merging with the D.C. protest at this point. Those closer to Richmond can meet up at City Hall. The Baltimore protest starts at 1:30 p.m. at 100 Holliday St.

President Obama Inaugural T-Shirts, Hats, Buttons & Other Memorabilia at Claude Taylor Photography Gallery

When yesterday morning that I rushed to the Waterfront Mall in SW WDC to pickup newspaper post election editions one of the first things that I noticed when crossing M on 4th Street was that the New York Post, New York Daily News and Washington Post newpaper machines were empty.

I then went inside of the Safeway, only to learn that they, too, were sold out!

Realizing that I should have started my search much earlier in the morning I then took the subway to L'Enfant Plaza in SW and checked at the newspaper store at the WMATA L'Enfant Plaza Station exit at La Promenade Shopping Mall.

"Sold Out" is what the woman behind the counter told me. "Come back at around noon ..." she added.

A newspaper collection containing election and inaugural editions dating back to 1992 and 1993, respectively, empty newspaper machines added to the SOLD OUT reactions that I got from the security guard at Safeway and the cashier at La Promenade newspaper store concerned me.

I then took the subway to Metro Center and stopped in at the Newspaper Store on 12th and just south of G Street. "Sold out!"

I rushed down to Trovers at Columbia Square on F Street between 12th and 13th Streets and learned that they do not sell newspapers.

I then rushed to the newspaper store at the Shoppes at National Place. "Sold out!" The nice lady behind the counter told me that she receives 130 or more copies each day and within minuties of their receipt, yesterday morning, they were all gone.

OK, now I was really concerned. I rushed over to Borders at the corner of 14th and F Street in NW and the minute that I walked into the door and veered in the direction of the newspaper section a man who had observed me said suggested that I should not 'waste my time'. They, too, were SOLD OUT.

As we both exited the store he chatted for a minute or two and explained that he had been looking for editions since 2 am in the morning.

Proceeding north on 14th Street in the direction of K Street I began to photograph empty newspaper machines along the way. It was at the WMATA McPherson Square Station at the corner of 14th and Eye Street I found a small stack of the The Washington Examiner Post Election Special Edition.

And that street musician / busker Mark Francis Nickens after suggesting that I may should check downstairs at the convenience store at the McPherson Square Station said " ... but good luck ...!".

Though I learned that the Metro Store at the McPherson Square Station underground exit does not sell newspapers I, also, realzied if they did ... they probably would have been SOLD OUT!

Continuing north on 14th to K I documented empty newspaper machines along the way. When on K at 14th that I inquired of a Downtown SAM if she knew of any newspaper stores on K Street she suggested that I head west to the World News between 17th Street and Connecticut Avenue.

VOILA! While I was able to pick-up several post election editions including The Washington Times, New York Daily News and The Baltimore Sun ... The Washington Post and The New York Post were SOLD OUT!

Since I live in WDC I was not as concerned about obtaining The Washington Post "Post Election Edition" as I was about the New York Post which I have a much larger newspaper collection of.

My interest in the New York Post and New York Daily News are more about the blazing headlines.

It was then that my search for the New York Post "Post Election Edition" shifted into high gear. If World News did not have it I realized that I 'had a problem'.

Exiting from World News I picked up a copy of the Financial Times post election issue at the corner of Connecticut Avenue and K Street, NW. And, then, rushed over to Borders at the corner of 18th and I Streets in NW.

When I asked the clerk at the front of store for newspaper election editions, directing me to the check-out area he said, "I believe that they only have The Wall Street Journal left".

When during my short walk from the front door to the checkout area that a blonde white woman in a blue long sleeve shirt began to stalk me the exact same way as had a handsome young white guy in a hat when the week before I had picked up a copy of The Essential KITARO ... which is the manner by which I am 'policed' whenever that I SWB (shop while black) ... I turned to the white woman as I often do when I am policed in stores, on the subway or in the streets and politely said "white lady, please stop stalking me the way people do when they see black men".

Remembering that the white boy in hat had stalked me in the exact same way just a few days before ... I explained further that as a 55 year old black man "I'm sick and tired ...!".

While I support Obama and know in my soul that he is the man for this time ... as a 55 year old black man ... the damage has already done.

I will not get caught into the FALSE HOPE. The damage has been done!

In search of New York Post "Post Election" Editions and proceeding north on 18th Street, left of Dupont Circle and up Connecticut Avenue to Florida Avenue in NW ... Tracy Young's production of CeeVox's "What's Done Is Done" reverberated in my head.

Unfortunately, when I stopped in at Kramer Books near Q Street the staff would inform me that they too were all sold old and suggested that I visit the Washington Post Building at 15th and L Streets in NW. As was the Newspaper Cafe at Connecticut and Florida Avenues SOLD OUT as well.

And while I appparently was not the only person who had an interest in post election editions what I found amazing was the manner by which people reacted to me, as a black male, at each of the locations that I stopped into.

So when observing that I was getting a bit bothered by all the attention that he and others at the cafe were displaying toward me ... the black police officer said "Man, we'll just being nosey!".

I joked and said "Man, I know. As a 55 year old black man ... people are always too nosey about what I am doing!".

As I walked back down Connnecticut Avenue toward Q Street in the direction of WMATA Dupont Circle Station (North) I telephoned Richard in Fort Lauderdale and asked if came across a post election issue of the New York Post that he purchase it and save it for me.

While waiting on the platform several people who had seen me photographing in the street and stopping into stores, in search of post election issues, stalked me so much on the subway that I had to turn to a black woman and a white woman, in two seperate occasions and ask that they NOT POLICE and OVERSEE a BLACK MAN on subway ....

The damage has been done!

Which brings to mind the purpose of this blog posting.

On my way north on Connecticut Avenue from Dupont Circle, after noticing and then photographing the Obama Inaugural window display I stopped in at the Claude Taylor Photography Gallery which is one of my favorite store windows to photograph. Which brought 2 June 2006 when friends from South Boston VA visited me and a few weeks later in July when I stopped in at Lambda Rising.

What's done is done!

If you are in search of top quliaty OBAMA Inagural tee-shirts, hats, buttons and other election paraphernalia ... you should definately stop in at the Claude Taylor Photography Gallery at 1627 Connecticut Avenue in NW Washington DC. Telephone (202) 518-4000 to inquire of their OBAMA Inaugural collection.

Speaking of Obama and HOPE ... perhaps, your experience on Connecticut Avenue will be different than mine. As a 55 year old black man, I am not as likely to believe in false hope as some may HOPE that I would.

You better hurry to Claude Taylor Photography at 1627 Connecticut Avenue because, considering the quality, those tee-shirts, hats, buttons and other paraphernalia will soon sell out!

My Documentation of the 33rd Annual Marine Corps Marathon

While my first and second documentations of the Marine Corps Marathon took place in Georgetown in 1995 and 1999, respectively, many of my 2000 images shot on 35 mm film, in the vacinity of the US Capitol, have never before been seen since the negatives have not yet been processed.

Since in the past two years Crystal City has been one of my ongoing urban projects I made a point this year to begin my documentation of the 2008 Marine Corps Marathon at the intersection of 18th Street and Crystal Drive in Crystal City. Perhaps, at the 22 1/2 mile location.

Following the race course with the runners to the finish line I then beared left onto 12th Street South in the Crystal City vacinity before turning right onto Army Navy Drive.

Turned right onto South Fern Street in the direction of the Pentagon and left onto South Rotary Road along the Pentagon South Parking lot perimeter.

Turned left onto Columbia Pike (Highway 244) just before making an immediate right onto the Route 27 (Washington Boulevard) ramp.

Followed Washington Boulevard to the Route 110 off ramp and turned right onto the Route 110 access road in the direction of the Pentagon North Parking Lot.

Continued right following the Route 110 access road under the Washington Boulevard overpass, beared right onto Route 110.

Continued on Route 110 in the northbound lanes, turned left onto Marshall Drive, turned right onto the Marine Corps War Memorial access road and proceeded along the access road to the FINISH LINE.

As I walked in the direction of Rosslyn and then across Key Bridge to Georgetown, After The Race would bring my 2008 Marine Corps Marathon documentation to a close.

Which includes photography and video footage.

Click the above image to view my 33rd Annual Marine Corps Marathon photo collection at Flickr. Which, since I took many photos and video clips may not be completed until the 2009 event.

Perhaps, in celebration of the 2009 event I may will release a photo / video montage reflecting on the 2008 event similar to my In Search of the Sun - NYC - 31 August - 10 September 2007 project.

Future of Lower 8th Street, SE Community Meeting - Wednesday, 29 October 2008

The construction of the I-395 freeway separated lower 8th Street, SE from upper Barracks Row and led to the demolition of some of the historic street frontage. Lower 8th Street has not experienced the same level of economic and physical revitalization that can be seen on upper Barracks Row. However, these blocks are strategically positioned between the Capitol Hill neighborhood, the historic Navy Yard campus, and the new development occurring in the Capitol Riverfront and surrounding Nationals Park. Lower 8th Street could become a destination gateway that provides an exciting connection to all of these areas.

A 7pm community meeting will be held on Wednesday evening, 29 October 2008 at the Friendship House (619 D Street SE) to discuss the future of 8th Street, SE south of the I-395 Freeway with Urban Planning Masters students from the University of Maryland.

First Annual RACE TO REMEMBER 5K draws more than 500 in benefit of National Law Enforcement Museum

Organized by the Washington DC Metropolitan Police in benefit of the National Law Enforcement Museum, the first annual National Law Enforcemont Officers Memorial RACE TO REMEMBER 5K was a triumphant success as several hundred volunteers and supporters cheered the more than 500 running participates on.

First assembling at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial at Judiciary Square just off F Street between 4th and 6th Streets and directly across from the National Building Museum from 6:15 until 8:15 am a Pre-Race Rally was held just before the 8:32 am step-off.

The race would then proceed east on F to 3rd Street, NW, and south on 3rd to Pennsylvania Avenue which is where it veered left until First Street, NW. South on First Street pass the US Capitol through the National Mall until Independence Avenue in SW and then left until First Street, NE.

Proceeding north to East Capitol Street, east on 2nd Street, NE, and then west onto Independence Avenue, SW, runners passed the Library of Congress and the US Supreme Court along the way.

On a return trek along Independence Avenue the Cannon, Rayburn and Longworth House and Congressional Buildings were to their left and the US Capitol Grounds and US Botanic Gardens appeared at their right before a final stretch north along 3rd Street through the National Mall to E Street, NW.

Where a final rush or stride to the triumphant Finish Line brought them back to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial grounds and directly across from the future site of the National Law Enforcement Museum.

Though I did not stay for the entire After The Race Ceremeony here is the NLEOMF blog article "Truly ... A Race to Remember" which gives an excellent rundown of the event.

Here is where you can find the official results by searching for Race to Remember: National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial 5K - 19 October 2008. According to the official results here is my photo of the first two runners Andrew Duncan (#444) of Las Vegas NV and Antonio Eppolito (#343) of Albuquerque NM just seconds before they reached the finish line at 5:19 and 5:20, respectively.

Though still under construction here is my NLEOMF Race to Remember 5K - 19 October 2008 photo collection at Flickr.

Who You Gonna Call ... For TV Repair?

When more than a year ago that the cable connector in the back of my RCA TV broke off ... and in sharp contrast to many years ago ... I was able to find only a few tv repair shops in the yellow pages.

After speaking with one particular shop in NE WDC who said that on such a minor job that they do not not like to do home service since the job may be more involved than what first was expected but if I were to bring it in that they could have it repaired within a day or two for about $75, since I do not have a car, I decided to purchase a new one instead.

I took the subway out to Best Buy at Pentagon City and returned with a Toshiba for a little more than $250. And since then the RCA has been sitting on top of the dresser drawer in my bedroom. And while I could and have used the DVD / CD player the TV, itset, was not much of an issue since I never sleep in the bedroom.

Until recently ... when guests stayed at my apartment for the funeral of one of their family members.

When searching the yellow pages last Saturday for TV repair services in the WDC area I found even less options than I had a year or so ago. After calling the three or four listings, the first who returned my call was William Davis of Davis Electrics.

When I inquired if I could bring the TV to his shop on Saturday, Sunday or Monday he said that it may would be best if he made a home visit. Which, quite frankly, was fine with me. The cost, for home service would be $112.36.

We made telephone arrangements for a Tuesday morning visit, sometime between 9 am and 12 noon. His voice and mannerism was such that when I received a return call from one other TV repair service company that I found in the Yellow Pages ... thanking him for having returned my call I told him that I had already made arrangements with another company.

When Mr. Davis telephoned me shortly after 11 am on Tuesday, 14 October to inform me that he was on his way to my apartment ... mentioning that I was between Waterfront Mall and Fort McNair I gave him instructions of what he needed to do to enter excess through the complex's gate.

Arriving shortly before noon, Mr. Davis conducted his business in a most professional and friendly manner. Within the hour, he had restalled the cable connector and made sure, before leaving, that it was in proper working order by first testing it out on the cable box in the living room.

Though his fee was $112.36, and handed him $120.

So, if you were to ask me who would I call if I were in need of a TV repair service my resounding answer would be WILLIAM DAVIS of DAVIS ELECTRICS at 202-332-2555.

His shop is located at 1522 U Street, NW, WDC.
