One of District's Oldest White Oak Swamp Trees is Located at T Street Park, NW,

After first photographing T Street Park at the intersection of New Hampshire Avenue at 17th and T Streets, NW, on Monday afternoon, 7 June and as as result learned that White Oak Swamp tree is one of the oldest in the District I returned on the following day to get better shots of the historic tree.

In fact, since August 2009, trees have been one of new ongoing themes.

Escape the Heat to Corcoran Gallery's Free Summer Saturdays

As reported in my previous Memorial Day Weekend posting, from 29 May through 4 September, the Corcoran Gallery of Art will be hosting its Free Summmer Saturdays 2010 series.

In an attempt to escape the heat and humidity ... I spent an hour or more, last Saturday, revisiting the Corcoran.

Rachel Horlick Completes 2nd Mural for DC's Golden Triangle BID

En route to and from the 19 June 2010 Free Summer Saturday at the Corcoran Gallery of Art I'd capture artist Rachel Horlick with friends and colleagues putting the final touches on her mural on the south facade of the Club Quarters Hotel and just around the corner from Café Soleil at 839 17th Street in NW Washington DC.

Horlicks’ patterned design is the second work of alley art commissioned by the BID, as part of their public art program. Last year, Horlicks' funky art was added to Luigi’s Alley on 19th Street near M Street NW.

While events associated with Crystal City BID including a Public Art/Public Spaces series has been amongst my most prolific themes, in the past, there has not been as much 'public art' activity in the downtown DC BID organizations as has been the case with Crystal City BID. Now that Golden Triangle BID is promoting and commissioning more "public art" I'll keep my eyes and ears opened for future projects.

As I always like bringing attention to Public Art In Public Spaces.

Tony Gallo's Photography Exhibit at the 18th Street Penn Camera

I first noticed a photography exhibition at the Penn Camera on 18th Street in NW Washington DC in late May 2010 when I stopped in to pick up a lens cover. While I did not take any photos of the Antoinette Charles exhibit it has stuck in my mind.

So when I returned to the Penn Camera at 1015 18th Street, NW, last Friday afternoon to purchase another lens cover for the second camera I inquired if I could photograph the current exhibition which features the work of Tony Gallo.

Congressional Art Competition Exhibit in Crystal City Features Artwork of 68 Students from VA's 8th District

Launched in 1982, each spring, a nation-wide high school arts competition is sponsored by the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives. The Congressional Art Competition is an opportunity to recognize and encourage the artistic talent in the nation, as well as in each congressional district.

Opened to all high school students and under the theme of "An Artistic Discovery" an opening reception for the 2010 competition winners will be held on Thursday, 17 June for a year long exhibition at the Cannon Tunnel of the US Capitol.

On Monday, 24 May 2010 an opening reception was held in Crystal City at the Vornado Building at 2011 Crystal Drive in Arlington Va featuring the artwork of 68 students from Virginia's 8th District. With a total of 150 submissions from Congressman Jim Moran's district, the remaining works were on display at the Arlington Art Center at 3550 Wilson Boulevard in Arlington VA through Saturday, 5 June 2010.

The Crystal City "An Artistic Discovery" Congressional Art Competition (8th District VA) Exhibition will be on display in the lobby of the Vornado Building at 2011 Crystal Drive in Arlington VA through the end of August 2010.

My "You Raise Me Up" Gay Anthems / Pride 2010 Mix

Having kicked off the GLBT Pride 2010 season with last weekend's "I Will Survive" house mix which was in celebration of the 20th DC Black Pride the second installment of my Pride 2010 series and in celebration of the 35th Capital Pride 2010, entitled "You Raise Me Up", features a gay anthems tracklist of pop/dance mixes created by Almighty Records.

Which I came upon last week when checking out the Diana Ross International website which recently released the Almighty Presents: We Love Diana Ross digital album.

After learning of Almighty Records' history, I'll definately be returning to its site, over and over again!

Since, and without apologies, the foundation of my music mixology is to reflect the history gay music.

Corcoran Free Summer Saturdays 2010 Series

Memorial Day Saturday, 29 May, was the opening of the Free Summer Saturdays 2010 Series at the Corcoran which will run through Labor Day Saturday, 4 September.

Which explains why when en route to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial that I'd capture Corcoran alumnus, Randolph Williams, chalk drawing at the corner of 17th Street and New York Avenue as he recreated the George Washington painting by Gilbert Stuart from the Corcoran collection.

Visit the Corcoran on Saturdays this summer for Gallery tours, workshops, demonstrations, and performances! Enjoy summer exhibitions and programming free of admission Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.

My "I Will Survive" House Mix Celebrates 20th DC Black Pride

With the 2010 Memorial Day Weekend representing the 20th Anniversary of DC Black Pride my May 2010 "I Will Survive" house mix not only serves as a musical tribute to the Club House but, in connection with my ongoing "This Is For The Black Men ..." docu-project speaks to my life experiences as an openly gay black man who for more than 40 years practiced integration.

While during my first stay in NYC from September 1980 through February 1982 I was more likely to party at The Saint it was during my second stay in NYC from March 1984 through November 1984 that as a result of a close friendship with Robert Cromwell that the Paradise Garage became a favorite dance club as well.

Somewhere along the way I also became friends with Richard Long who not only designed the sound system at the Garage but also that of the Club House in Washington DC.

After returning to DC in late 1984, it was in the spring of 1985 which was when I moved to 1320 Q Street, NW, Washington DC that the Club House became a frequent weekend party place for me.
